A pattern for basic, mid to long length fingerless mitts. You could add a cable or basic lace pattern if you want, or use a highly colored varigated yarn to good effect.
University
set of 4 size 6 dpns, or needles that give you gauge
approx. 100 yards worsted weight yarn- I used Encore Colorspun
stitch holders
stitch markers
yarn needles
Gauge
5 sts = 1 inch
7 rws = 1 inch
University
Cast on 40 stitches and join, being careful to not twist stitches. Place a marker on the first needle.
Work 1×1 ribbing for 20 rows.
Switch to stockinette stitch (k every round) for 7 rows.
On 8th row, k 20 st and then start thumb gusset- Place marker, M1R, k1, M1L, Place marker, k across the rest of the round

Next row: knit
Next row: knit
next row: knit to marker, M1R, knit to marker, M1L, move marker, k across the rest of the round.
Rep these three rows until you have 13 stitches between markers.
Next row-k across to markers. Place the stitches between markers on stitch holder and k across the rest of the round.
Work 14 more rows in stockinette.
Work 5 rows in 1×1 ribbing.
CO in ribbing.
Thumb
Place the first 10 stitches onto two needles from holder (5 on each needle). With 3rd needle, pick up last 3 stitches from holder and then pick up another 5 stitches from around thumb gusset. Work 5 rows 1×1 ribbing and CO in ribbing.
Weave in ends.
Second mitt-work as the first mitt.
