Thunder Boomer Cocktail

thunder boomer cocktail

Interestingly, a Dark N Stormy can only be a Dark N Stormy with Gosling’s Black Seal rum.

As in, legally speaking, the name is trademarked and has to have Gosling’s Black Seal rum to be a Dark N Stormy.

I however prefer black rums other than Gosling’s Black Seal-and I didn’t even have black rum in the house this week. I normally keep something like Kraken but today all we had was a ‘normal’ spiced rum-by normal, I mean the type of rum I think most Americans, at least around here, think of when they hear the word ‘rum’.

This is a fairly straight forward drink-but it’s going to hit a little. Ginger beer runs hot. Even not hot ginger beer runs hot. It’s not gingerale (though I do love rum in gingerale). Ginger beer is a different animal, and while purists will argue with me, I think that a brand like Goya is just fine for an application like this.

I do tend to make this drink on the weaker side. Add more rum for more of a charge.

Thunder Boomer Cocktail

1/2 shot (or more) rum, preferably a black rum

ginger beer

Add rum to a glass; top with ice and ginger beer

The 21 Club Shrub

21 club shrub

So you have all this shrub laying around (strawberry and mint, or peach and mint, or blueberry and mint, or…any fruit and mint because I’m on a mint kick right now).

What do you do with it? You can add it to water (fizzy or otherwise) and just kick back, pleased that you managed to make soda without the soda.

Or…you really can kick it up, add some rum, and have a good time with your drinking vinegar.

The 21 Club Shrub Cocktail

1/2 to 1 shot rum, to taste

1/4 to 1 shot shrub, also to taste (if you’re new to drinking vinegars, start with a light hand. Yes, it’s going to be acidic.)

Seltzer water

In a small to medium glass add rum, then add shrub and mix. Top with water.

I tend to make a strong glass (both rum and shrub-wise) and just keep topping with water as I go along.

Food preservation is about more than pickles. Sometimes it’s about rum.

Early Fall Cocktail

While I may occasionally double post I don’t triple post…unless I’m blogging before coffee.

It’s totally not early fall. It doesn’t even feel like early fall. It doesn’t even feel like March.

But this cocktail tastes like the best apple orchard experience rolled into a cup.

I had a Peeps party on Saturday-nothing like loading up every baked good imaginable with Peeps. Those recipes are to come. But I got the most excited about this.

I love cinnamon whiskey. I have no affiliation to Early Times, I just happened to have a bottle of Fire Eater. If you can’t find it, use Fireball.
